Classic looks, large crystal-clear numbers, day-date display, superb luminosity and 23-jewel automatic movement – the answer has to be Seiko 5 SNZG07J1-LS13 watch.
Who would not love this watch? What do I look for in a watch? To start with, it must display the time accurately, it should be easy to see in the day or night and therefore have adequate luminosity. It must ideally also display the day and date so I don’t get it wrong while writing out cheques or filling up some form. I also love nature so for me, a watch that never requires batteries is simply awesome.
I bought the Seiko 5 SNZG07J1-LS13 men’s watch because it more than met all my criteria. It has a nice off-white dial with large numbers in black. On the outer side next to each number is a large luminescent marker. On the inner side next to each number, are smaller numbers starting with 24 so you can also read the time in 24-hour mode.
The hour and minute hands too have luminescence and are big. There is a second’s hand that looks like a nice pointy arrow and the watch has this lovely, strong, tick-tick sound as it counts away the seconds.
The Seiko 5 SNZG07J1-LS13 watch that I received has a stainless-steel case that has a kind of aluminium-white like finish to it and this goes very well with the off-white dial. When I turn it over, the back of the watch has a transparent glass cover and I can see the internal mechanism quite clearly.
According to the description in the watch manual, my Seiko 5 SNZG07J1-LS13 has ‘automatic’ 23-jewel movement. One of my friends who is technically inclined, told me that it means that when I wear the watch, it converts movement of my hand into kinetic energy which in turn is used to charge an internal battery. Once charged, the watch will keep accurate time even if unused for a couple of days. Having just received the watch today, I haven’t had the opportunity to test it yet.
The manual also says that the Seiko 5 SNZG07J1-LS13 comes with a Hardlex crystal which Seiko says is scratch resistant – a good thing as I tend to get my watches scratched while I work in my workshop. The Seiko 5 SNZG07J1-LS13 came with a leather belt fitted. I prefer the leather belt because watches with leather belts fit the wrist perfectly. Watches with metal bracelets tend to simply hand limply just above the palm. The leather belt that came with this watch is nice and soft and feels very comfortable on the hand.
Finally, the watch is water resistant up to depths of 100 Meters. I don’t know if I am ever going to go 100 meters deep; but I certainly have no intention of jumping into a river or sea to test the watch. But it does feel nice to know that I can take a shower wearing the watch or jump into the hotel pool wearing the watch without fear of the water ruining it. All said and done, I’m quite happy with it. I bought the watch online at Citywatches.in and at the time I bought it, I had paid just under rupees ten grand for it – a total bargain price.
